
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is an internationally oriented university in Brussels. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society. VUB offers high quality education to more than 21,000 students from 145 nationalities on four campuses: humanities, sciences & engineering, health, photonics. We count more than 160 research groups and, with the extra 6,000 medical staff at the university hospital, you get one of the biggest centers of knowledge in the capital of Europe. Hence, VUB contributes to the Brussels-Capital Region which received the award of Innovation Leader scoring high on the number of scientific co-publications. The university is an avid participant in European projects. VUB is the number one Brussels-based organization in number of participations to Horizon 2020: it was granted 202 H2020 research projects accounting for more than 100 million euros European funding. In these projects VUB collaborates with 1985 partners from 79 countries and is coordinator of 28% of the projects. As of 07/2023, VUB has already been granted 51 million euros for 83 Horizon Europe participations. With its partners, the VUB has been chosen by the European Commission as one of the first pilot projects for developing a “European University”: the EUTOPIA alliance of 10 European Universities Transforming to an Open Inclusive Academy.
