From UCD to Cumucore: Advancing 5G Security through Distributed AI

As part of the ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange Program funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Chamara Sandeepa, a PhD researcher at the UCD School of Computer Science, has commenced a secondment at Cumucore Oy, Finland. Representing the Network Softwarization and Security Labs (NetsLab) at University College D0ublin, Chamara embarks on an exciting research collaboration focused on enhancing intrusion detection systems (IDS) for 5G networks using distributed artificial intelligence.

During this secondment, Chamara’s work investigates the development of distributed learning-based IDS tailored to detect and prevent live threats and anomalies within mobile network environments. His research combines adversarial machine learning and distributed intelligence to evaluate and strengthen the resilience of next-generation mobile infrastructures.

A key aspect of this work involves the generation of adversarial attacks through the 5G RAN to simulate real-world threat scenarios. These attacks are used to stress-test network components and gather valuable data for training robust AI-based intrusion detection mechanisms. This approach aims to provide dynamic, scalable, and intelligent security solutions aligned with the needs of 6G-era networks.

The collaboration with Cumucore—a company renowned for its innovation in cloud-native 5G core and edge solutions—provides a unique opportunity to test and validate these ideas in a practical and industrial setting.

Chamara expressed his gratitude to Jose Costa-Requena and the Cumucore team for their hospitality and support, as well as to Dr. Bart Siniarski, Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage, and the UCD coordination team for their ongoing guidance throughout this international exchange.

This secondment not only strengthens EU-industry-academia collaboration under the ENSURE-6G umbrella but also contributes valuable insights into the evolving landscape of cybersecurity in mobile networks.
