As part of the ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange Program, Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage, Associate Professor at University College Dublin and Director of NetsLab, completed a one-month secondment at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium. The secondment took place from 29 July – 28 August 2025, hosted at the Faculty of Engineering, with support from Prof. An Braeken and Prof. Kris Steenhaut.
The visit was conducted within the framework of Work Package 3 (WP3): Efficient and Sustainable Security for 6G Cloud Continuum. The main objectives of the secondment were to:
- Evaluate existing privacy solutions for 6G networks
- Identify the most critical and probable privacy threats facing future 6G environments
- Analyze privacy requirements arising from key 6G use cases
During his stay, Prof. Liyanage engaged in in-depth discussions with the VUB research team, focusing on privacy-preserving mechanisms for emerging 6G applications and exploring synergies between ongoing ENSURE-6G tasks and VUB’s expertise in security and distributed systems.
The secondment provided an excellent platform to reinforce Ireland–Belgium collaboration in advanced 6G research, opening new opportunities for joint publications, student mobility, and collaborative project proposals under the EU Horizon Europe framework.

Looking ahead, the exchange also set the stage for future workshops and training activities to be jointly organized by UCD and VUB, ensuring long-term impact in capacity building and knowledge transfer across the ENSURE-6G consortium.
This staff exchange has not only advanced the research objectives of WP3 but also strengthened the international research network on privacy, security, and sustainability for 6G networks, aligning with ENSURE-6G’s vision of building secure and trustworthy future communication infrastructures.
