ENSURE-6G Reaches a Major Milestone: Mid-Term Review Meeting

24 June 2026 | Online

On 24 June 2026, the ENSURE-6G consortium convened its Mid-Term Review Meeting with the Research Executive Agency (REA) — a defining milestone in the project’s journey toward establishing the security and privacy foundations of next-generation 6G networks. Held entirely online, the session brought together approximately 50 participants from across the 15-partner consortium for a structured and highly productive day of progress reporting, evaluation, and forward planning.

Opening & Consortium Overview

The meeting was opened by Charuka from University College Dublin (UCD), who welcomed participants and delivered a consortium overview, introducing the diverse institutional partners that form the ENSURE-6G network and framing the day’s agenda.

Coordinator’s Overview

The project’s coordination team — Bart and Charuka from UCD — presented a comprehensive overview of the project’s status. Their presentation addressed:

  • General project progress and key achievements to date
  • Secondment implementation: actual exchanges versus the original plan
  • Status of project deliverables
  • Risk identification and mitigation strategies
  • Impact and dissemination activities

This overview provided the REA panel with a high-level picture of how the project has evolved since its inception, and highlighted the breadth of international research collaboration that ENSURE-6G has enabled.

Work Package Progress Reports

A central pillar of the day was a series of seven Work Package (WP) progress reports, each delivered by the respective WP leader. Following a structured format — covering objectives, deliverable implementation, the link between secondments and tasks, and future implementation plans — these presentations collectively demonstrated the depth of scientific activity across the project.

The WP presentations were delivered by:

  • WP1 — Qiang Tang, Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)
  • WP2 — Viet Pham, Trinity College Dublin (TCD)
  • WP3 — An Braeken, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)
  • WP4 — Mark de Reuver & Aaron Ding, Delft University of Technology (TUD)
  • WP5 — Edgardo Montes de Oca, Montimage
  • WP6 — Qiang Tang, Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)
  • WP7 — Bart, University College Dublin (UCD)

Each report reinforced the importance of linking researcher secondments to concrete project deliverables — a core principle of the MSCA Staff Exchanges programme and a strength of the ENSURE-6G approach.

Secondee Interviews

One of the most meaningful segments of the review was a dedicated one-hour session in which REA representatives spoke directly with seconded staff. This provided researchers who have undertaken cross-institutional exchanges with the opportunity to share their experiences first-hand — reflecting on the scientific value of their visits, the skills and knowledge gained, and the broader impact on both the project and their personal research careers.

The depth and richness of these exchanges spoke to the very purpose of ENSURE-6G: fostering genuine knowledge transfer and building a connected, future-ready community of 6G security researchers across Europe and beyond.

Open Discussion & Next Steps

The meeting concluded with an open discussion session, bringing together all participants for a dialogue on REA observations, recommendations, and agreed next steps. This final segment provided an opportunity to reflect on the project’s trajectory and to align on priorities for the remaining phase of ENSURE-6G.

Looking Ahead

The Mid-Term Review is more than a reporting obligation — it is a moment to take stock of what a multinational, multidisciplinary consortium has achieved together, and to sharpen focus on the work still ahead. With approximately 50 participants joining from institutions across Europe, Asia, and beyond, today’s virtual session was a testament to the strength, scale, and commitment of the ENSURE-6G community.

The project team extends its sincere thanks to all participants, Work Package leaders, seconded staff, and the REA review panel for their engagement and contributions to a highly productive Mid-Term Review.

The second half of the ENSURE-6G journey begins now.
