ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange: Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage’s Secondment at USJ

As part of the ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange Program, Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage, Associate Professor at University College Dublin and Director of NetsLab, completed a one-month research secondment at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ). The visit was carried out in two parts: 21 March – 6 April 2025 and 4 – 20 July 2025.

During his time at USJ, Prof. Liyanage contributed to Use Case 1: Beyond 5G for Tele-medicine, aligned with the ENSURE-6G project goal of advancing security and privacy for 6G networks.

The secondment provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties between USJ and UCD. Prof. Liyanage engaged in research discussions and knowledge sharing with Dr. Charitri, Head of Department Dr. Uditha Wijewardhana, and Dean of the Faculty Dr. Nishad. These interactions created avenues for new collaborations and fostered stronger academic links between the institutions.

A key highlight of the visit was discussions on the establishment of an AI Energy Institute at USJ. This forward-looking initiative is expected to serve as a hub for research on artificial intelligence and sustainable energy solutions, with potential to create synergies between AI, federated learning (FL), explainable AI (XAI), and 6G security research.

In addition to research work, the secondment reinforced the capacity-building goals of ENSURE-6G, promoting international collaboration, academic mobility, and cross-cultural exchange.

Prof. Liyanage also emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration through joint workshops, with plans to co-organize at least two workshops—one each year—bringing together researchers from Ireland, Sri Lanka, and the broader global ENSURE-6G consortium.

The ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange at USJ has not only advanced technical research but also paved the way for future collaborations in AI-driven sustainable energy and 6G security, further solidifying the project’s mission to shape secure and trustworthy next-generation networks.
