From the UK to Spain: Advancing 6G Sustainability – Key Outcomes of the ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange

Within the ENSURE-6G Staff Exchange Programme, supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), and under Task 2.1 Design of AI-Driven Security Solutions for 6G Networks, Dr. Hamidreza Khaleghzadeh from the University of Portsmouth (UK) undertook a secondment at Telefónica Innovación Digital (TID) in Barcelona during August and September 2025.

The collaboration focused on applying artificial intelligence to enhance the performance of future 6G networks. Together, the team examined advanced AI-enabled methods aimed at delivering high network performance while prioritising energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This joint work between the University of Portsmouth and Telefónica’s Research and Innovation division supports the development of next-generation communication systems with a significantly reduced energy footprint.

The secondment provided a valuable bridge between academic research and industrial practice, contributing to Europe’s digital resilience and the responsible evolution of forthcoming 6G infrastructures.

Dr. Khaleghzadeh extends his sincere gratitude to Dr. Ferran Diego Andilla and the Telefónica R&I team for their hospitality and productive engagement. He also acknowledges the essential support of the ENSURE-6G consortium—particularly Dr. Ronel Beukman and Dr. Katerina Kanta—for enabling these meaningful exchange opportunities.

This cooperation further strengthens ENSURE-6G’s commitment to advancing secure, privacy-preserving, and trustworthy 6G technologies through international collaboration and interdisciplinary research.
